Northern Budget

The Christian Scientists of Boston have won the heartfelt commendation and appreciation of their fellow-citizens by one of the most striking contributions to the beautification of the municipality yet undertaken by private enterprise. The admirable church whose great dome rises above the city roofs in one of the most congested districts, has hitherto been suffocated and submerged by an unsightly array of apartment houses and faced by an unkempt vacant lot. This latter eyesore has recently been acquired by the Scientists and is now converted into a spot of beauty artistically terraced and laid out in grassy sweeps and well-designed walks, affording a vista of approach to the noble piece of architecture which inspires ethusiasm and sets an example for further civic advancement. The blank wall of the apartment block which flanks one side of the little park, and which has hitherto been given to glaring theatrical advertisements, has been made the foundation of trellis work which is presumably intended to support beautifying vines.
