In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, we read, "We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal sense of the absence of light, at the coming of which darkness loses the appearance of reality" (p. 215); and this has been my own experience. About two years ago a very small bunch appeared under my chin, but I did not deny the error in a scientific way and did not "stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392). The growth did not increase very rapidly, in size, and as it did not pain me I did not pay much attention to it until September, 1908, when it seemed to be quite noticeable. I then began to wake up, to realize where I stood. I certainly had been in darkness, and I knew that it was time for me to work.
I tried to clear my consciousness, and to know that as God did not create disease I could not manifest it. I worked on in this line for a few weeks, when I met a Christian Science practitioner to whom my husband had gone for treatment. She gave me instructions which I tried to follow, and worked to the best of my understanding; but error had crept into my consciousness with the suggestion of some malignant growth, and just then darkness seemed as real as light. I saw that I was losing ground, as the bunch was very much larger and had become very red and painful. I then wrote to the practitioner and asked her to take my case. In reply I received a telegram, saying she would begin treatment at once. That was the 9th of July, 1909, and at the end of two weeks the healing was complete. For a few days after the practitioner began treatment the pain was not so severe, but the sixth day it became very painful again and presented an alarming appearance. At night it began to discharge freely; then I was freed from pain, the soreness gradually went, and the light came. Two of my relatives had died from malignant growths, so it can be seen what this healing means to me.
I feel thankful to God, and to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has taught us the truth that makes us free.
