I can truly say it is because of the inadequacy of human language to express the deep gratitude of my heart for the larger understanding of God which I have gained through the study of Science and Health, that I have refrained so long from declaring it through these columns; but now these words of Jesus come to me with a new meaning, "He that sent me is with me; the Father hath not left me alone." I realize as never before that the father has never left me alone, and that He will now, and always, supply my need.
I had occasion recently to look over a large box of written matter, and to contrast my thought of fifteen years ago with my thought of today. All through those articles—articles on Scriptural topics, written for a small monthly published by the church to which I then belonged—I can trace my concept of God as either sending or permitting sickness, distress, trials, poverty, and the like, for a good purpose. I see, and marvel now, how illogically I argued that He would in some way bring good out of evil; that way, however, I never seemed to make clear. The point I would make in commenting upon it is the fact that underneath this pile of promiscuous words I plainly trace a plaintive soul-cry for purity, light, God! When I stumbled, as it then seemed, into Christian Science, four years ago, and when that grand "Key" was placed in my hands, I took it eagerly and unlocked, though slowly, the everlasting truths of the Bible, and understood for the first time what Job meant when he said, "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye seeth thee."
For more than twenty-one years, just ended, I have ministered to the church in the capacity of a pastor's wife, and naught have I but love for all those with whom I have been associated. Although positive divergence of thought for the past two years at length terminated in our resignation, this separation came about so gently that now it is counted in the past. I simply am left to wonder at the graciousness of God's leading.
