TRUTH'S GENTLE APPEAL

The low, sweet voice of Truth is ringing in my ears,—
Like tones of silv'ry bells, the melodies of years.
It calls me from all care, all fear, all want and strife,
From everything that mars the beauty of my life;
It takes away all ill, all sorrow, and all pain,
For in its presence dear no evil can remain.

It rings the glad refrain of "Peace, good will to men;"
It spells the sweetest lays e'er heard from tongue or pen;
It pours into my soul the music of the rill,
Which seems to sing to me the song of "Peace, be still."
Its echoes still resound, and never know alloy;
And ever and anon, I sing aloud for joy!

It shows me life's broad scope, that comes with service sweet,
Whose radiance fills the soul, and life becomes complete.
It shows that purer joys do come to those who wait,—
The love that never cloys, that never turns to hate;
Its richest, greatest boon to serve for others' sake,—
To voice one thought sublime, that shall some soul awake.
