On the 16th of July Mrs. Eddy, Discoverer and Founder...

Rogue River Courier

On the 16th of July Mrs. Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, passed her 89th birthday, and the event has been made a matter of comment by the newspapers throughout the entire country. During the last few years a number of writers have published magazine and newspaper articles which severely criticized Mrs. Eddy personally and also her religious teachings, but no one of all the writers who have mentioned Mrs. Eddy's birthday has indulged in other than friendly words regarding her. None will attempt in the future to deny that this woman is a remarkable character, and we at the present day must admit that she will go down in history as one whose teachings have found followers in all ranks of life. It matters not what we may think of her religious belief, or of her therapeutic teachings in connection therewith, she is quite certain to occupy an important place among the founders of great religious organizations. The world will give her this distinction, regardless of what has been said by her detractors. As time goes on the thinkers of the world will place her name beside those who have accomplished something for the good of mankind. Already the encyclopedias have given her recognition on a par with the founders of other religious orders.

This paper believes in fairness and fair play. Every person has a right to think for himself, and no one should be condemned for his honest belief, be it religious or otherwise. This is said in the broad sense and does not mean that discussion should be curtailed. Mrs. Eddy's place before the world will not be affected by the criticisms of those who do not like her personally or believe in her teachings, but by that other class who become her disciples. There is room enough in the world for all who aim to do good, and it will be at least Christlike to give them an opportunity.
