Twelve years ago I suffered from a malignant disease...
Twelve years ago I suffered from a malignant disease—according to medical diagnosis—and had to submit to an exceedingly painful operation. I was relieved in some measure, but another disease soon set in, namely, gallstones. I consulted my physician, who told me that an operation would again be necessary; but as I demurred at this, he complied with my wish and sent me to Karlsbad, where I gradually got relief from the pain. I felt rather better for about a year, but was not healed permanently, for after that time the primary trouble appeared again and continued to increase, giving me almost unbearable pain. In the mean while my former physician had passed on, and as I did not know to whom to apply with full confidence, my condition grew worse. Through an acquaintance I heard that the successor of the physician in whose clinic I had been was a very capable man, and so I decided to seek help there.
The first operation having caused me such torment, I struggled greatly against another one, and would perhaps have postponed the still longer, but after an examination the physician said that I had waited much too long, that the protuberance was already too large. It seemed no use to struggle longer; therefore I had to yield. Compared with this operation, the former was only child's play, both with respect to its seriousness and to the slow recovery. I was kept in a state of stupefaction by the use of the strongest opiates for two weeks, and four weeks later I could only be brought home in a carriage. Then I realized how many of my friends had given me up. For the following six weeks I crept about in my house, using a stick for support, and only then could I attend somewhat to my business. Now that I had gone through all this, I hoped I had regained my health completely; but I was disappointed, for after a short while a throat trouble set in, so that I had to submit to the treatment of a specialist in Braunschweig. When I told him for what disease I had been operated upon, he immediately said that the case was a very serious one. I went to this specialist for nine months; my throat was finally so sore from the cauterization that I had difficulty in swallowing, and twitching of the muscles of the throat and neck had set in.
It is now three years ago that a traveling man, who knew my condition and what I had gone through, came to see me, and he told me wonderful things about Christian Science. He advised me to get up my courage and go to Hannover, as I surely would find healing, for he himself had seen cases of healing which could indeed be called wonderful. I therefore went to Hannover, and stayed there for two weeks. The Christian Science practitioner fortunately could take up the treatment at once. She explained to me precisely what I had to do, and I set all my trust upon our Father in heaven. After three days the pain diminished, and I kept on improving daily, so that my throat was completely healed in two weeks' time, and I felt well again.
