Mendola (Ill.) Bulletin

Our critic says that preachers, editors, physicians and philosophers have been for years trying to show the "deluded people," who are carried away by Christian Science the errors and deception of this "despicable superstition," but that "in spite of all their efforts it grows by leaps and bounds." It might have been added that many of these same preachers, editors, physicians, and philosophers, who at one time were engaged in opposing what they thought Christian Science to be, have since become its ardent advocates, having discovered that what they were combating was not Christian Science at all, but merely their very imperfect and incorrect conception of it. Is it not possible that our present critic will some day find that the "thousands of intelligent people who have been carried away by the underlying truths of Christian Science," among which he mentions "freedom from sense and passion," "victory over the body and its tyrants, fear and anger," etc., etc., have learned through proof and demonstration that Christian Science is indeed the "Spirit of truth" which Jesus said would come to the world and lead us "into all truth"?

Christian Scientists do not claim to be infallible in their demonstration of Christian Science. They simply realize that Christian Science correctly understood and applied by those who are living consistent Christian lives will do and is doing all that is claimed for it in the way of healing sickness and destroying sin. They do not, as our critic claims, boast of this regenerative work which Christian Science is enabling them to do, but they are glad to testify at the right time and in the right way to benefits received. They do not therefore claim that the Christian Science treatment never fails, but they do know that it succeeds in a great majority of cases in spite of the fact that many persons turn to Christian Science only as a last resort. There are on record thousands upon thousands of authenticated cases of the healing of organic and functional diseases as well as of all forms of sin, immorality, and vice. This is not mere assertion; it is recorded fact.
