Modern World
People have become adherents of Christian Science because it has brought them out of the gloom of much sorrow and tribulation and lifted them into the sunshine of Truth; it has turned them away from many subtle forms of error, destroyed their fears, and turned them to God, infinite, tender Love.
The world at large is ignorant of the delusions of mortal mind, and Mrs. Eddy has shown her followers how to detect its workings, but she has not implanted any fear of error in their minds. She has taught them how to overcome evil with good, how to understand God aright and thereby destroy error. Christian Science adheres firmly to the teaching that God is All and that God is good. The realization of the perfection and all-inclusiveness of God and His ideas enables Christian Scientists to destroy fear, heal the sick, and reform the sinner.
The wrong mental influence of one human mind over another is animal magnetism—the operator dispossesses the subject under his mental control of freedom, placing him in a condition of practical mental slavery. Animal magnetism is, however, wholly devoid of power to the Christian Scientist, protected by his understanding of God as all-powerful Love. Christian Science teaches that animal magnetism is of the devil and that the devil is only impersonal evil, an illusion, a lie without place or power. Animal magnetism has only supposititious power, and when one is freed from the belief in it by the understanding of Truth, even its seeming power is wholly destroyed. It is only the influence of the carnal mind which is not real, not eternal, referred to by St. Paul when he says: "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
