If Christians dared believe their own Christianity and talked with God, then there would come again to the church its lost God-consciousness. Jesus had such a consciousness of God that God and he were one. But his chief promise to the church was this same sense of God. The church became afraid of it and lost it. . . . It would come to the church again, dared it pray and believe such a sense of the divine presence in the world—in life, in experience, in one's own heart—that it fairly flooded all creation; the realest, nearest possession of mankind, God immanent in one's whole life, possessing all its being, one conscious of it above all else!
