From childhood I had felt an earnest desire to live so as to realize God's promises in every-day life. The time came when I was the only one of the family who was not a church-member, and after months of deliberation I came to the conclusion that if I would be obedient to their teaching I might realize the truth for myself, although I never could see how others had gained the needful "change of heart." I entered upon Christian work in all sincerity and earnestness of purpose, only to find it void of the very thing which I craved most, and which all humanity most needs, that is, to know that God is with us, here and now —an ever-present help, and not "a God afar off," to be known only after death. This experience caused me to lose interest, until one trouble after another brought me to the light.
Christian Science has indeed lighted my way for nine years. I was very slow to grasp the teachings of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, but through the faithful work of very dear relative I slowly but surely received the truth into my consciousness, and I rise each morning with thankfulness to God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to the dear friends who worked so patiently and lovingly for me, and each day brings new proof of God's care. Almost every ailment that could present itself has been met and overcome by this truth. In cases of severe accidents, headaches dating from my childhood, at the birth of two strong, robust children who have never known a material remedy, Christian Science has been the only dependence. Poverty is being overcome by the assurance that in God is our abidingplace. The greatest blessing is the change from a gloomy, sensitive nature to one of hope, cheerfulness, and strength to live and to love. The Sentinel, Journal, and Hymnal are my daily helps, and the Bible is always at hand. I owe to Christian Science my life, and all that I am or have.—MAUDE CLARK, Council Bluffs, Ia.
