Christian Scientists readily agree that there is only one...

Christian Scientists readily agree that there is only one infinite Mind, God; still they insist that finite man can grasp or understand this infinite Mind, God, only in a small measure, in his present state of consciousness, and in consequence is not in complete alinement with His laws; hence the opportunity for the existence and influence of false beliefs which sometimes generate discords in mortal man, which are manifested in what we call sickness.

If mortals had the understanding of that infinite Mind which Christ Jesus had while on earth, the understanding that enabled him to heal the sick, the lame, the halt, and the blind, the source of these disturbing factors would easily be recognized and banished from human experience. The life and practice of Christ Jesus indicated very clearly that he did not consider physical disease as normal and legitimate, but the result of sin. Jesus said to the impotent man whom he had healed, "Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." To believe that God produced sickness would result in the imputation that God possessed and could wield evil power, whereas we are told in the Scriptures that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." Evil then cannot possibly have a place in His consciousness. That would represent a "kingdom divided against itself," and could not stand, "for to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." If God is Spirit, and God is All, as the Scriptures teach, then God has no cognizance of false material beliefs.

Christian Scientists believe that the controlling feature of real Christianity is the supremacy of spiritual power, and that the result of the works and teaching of Jesus demonstrates beyond question that mortals must gain dominion over the flesh, which "profiteth nothing," through the Spirit, divine Mind, which giveth life.
