It is with great joy that I give my testimony to express...
It is with great joy that I give my testimony to express my thanks to God, and my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science—the truth which makes free. For seven years I suffered with severe spinal and stomach trouble, although I had many physicians. In October, 1908, I was very ill, and after two weeks' treatment a prominent physician here said that he had given me the strongest medicine known to medical science, but my stomach would not respond to medicine, and he could do no more for me.
I had almost reached the limit of human endurance, when a neighbor asked me to try Christian Science. She told me that many people had been healed by reading the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I did not believe in Christian Science myself, but I had many friends who had been wonderfully benefited; so I read the book through once, but I did not seem to understand what I was reading. My neighbor said I should read it again, that the light would come to me; so I read, studied, and prayed for understanding. I soon realized that my stomach did not distress me, and I could eat anything with no ill effect, which should have convinced me of the truth in the book; but I was still suffering terribly from the spinal trouble, and my husband insisted upon my consulting a lady physician. I did so, but with no beneficial results. Then, having lost all faith in man, I turned with all my heart to Science and Health, which brought to light the only living and true God, and man made in His image and likeness. It proved to me that sin, sickness, and death are but human beliefs, having no power or place in the kingdom of God.
I was blessed with this understanding in reading the book for the third time, and was healed. My physical healing has, however, passed into insignificance, compared with the spiritual uplifting. Mrs. Eddy's book was truly a "Key to the Scriptures" for me. I had seldom read the Bible, thinking it mere history of the past, which could not be lived or practised in this age; but I have learned that with God it is always now, that He is our ever-present help, and that in acknowledging no other power, all sorrows and fears vanish. I have derived great comfort from these words on page 446 of Science and Health: "To understand God strengthens hope, enthrones faith in Truth, and verifies Jesus' word: 'Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world:" and again, on page 14: "Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love. Hence the hope of the promise Jesus bestows: 'He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.' " I have proven this true, and now my greatest pleasure is in helping others.
