FROM OUR EXCHANGES
[Christian Commonwealth.]
We are today at the dawn of a new spiritual era. We can say, perhaps with greater truth than could Paul in the first century, that the mystery hid from ages and generations is now being made manifest. There is being felt in many hearts the need for a new revelation of spiritual truth. The faith of our fathers has lost power, not because it was not once vital and sufficient, but because it is inadequate to our present needs. It inspires us no longer because it no longer symbolizes what we can see of God and duty. It is outgrown. It is not as it was in the first century—all do not yet know that the old faith is dead or dying. But there are some souls that are awake or awaking. and know the thing whereof we speak. To them it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of heaven; to others it is not given. There are those whose hearts demand a larger vision of God, a more vital sense of relationship to Him. a new and deeper love to their fellows, a more imperative motive to duty. They see not only the crumbling forms of the old faith. but they feel the throb of the larger life that is . The present time is giving us a new interpretation of life, of nature, and of the purpose of existence. New ideas are pressing in upon the human mind. A great mental and spiritual awakening is taking place in the world today. The nineteenth century was called the "wonderful century," but it was only the introduction to a far greater century. The note of the nineteenth century was physical science. The note of the twentieth bids fair to be spiritual development. Men have been fed on the dry husks of materialism until they are crying out for food which will satisfy the craving of the higher nature. There is a search for the real penetrating the mind of the world as never before. There is a new and widespread interest in the spiritual aspect of life.
