In the book of Job we read: "He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light, " Christian Science has lifted me out of the pit of sickness and suffering into gladness and health. About two and a half years ago I was taken with severe pain, which gradually developed into acute stomach trouble. At first my condition did not seem very serious, but I could not help wondering why I was not well, as I had taken every remedy that was suggested; but none of them had any effect on me. I then consulted my father, who was a well-known practising physician in San Francisco at that time; but, although I restricted myself as to diet, and took faithfully the medicine my father prescribed, I grew worse and worse. Finally I could not eat without terrible pain, and was unable to walk more than a few blocks at a time. I was obliged to give up high school, and I spent hours in hopeless crying, not understanding why I had to suffer so.
When all new medicines and everything my father could do for me had failed, my sister proposed Christian Science. She had heared something of its healing efficacy, but I was very prejudiced against what I thought Christian Science to be. I had relied on materia medica all my life, but now the staff I had learned upon was broken, and in my desperation I forgot prejudice, and consented to try this new means of relief. That very afternoon my sister went for a practitioner of whom she had heard, but the practitioner was not in. In bitter disappointment she started for home, feeling that she must get some one and divine Love led her to the house of a Christian Scientist. Although I was somewhat doubtful, I stopped the use of all medicines, as I was told. That night the practitioner gave me absent treatment, but the next morning I went to see her, and in four treatments I was completely healed. Soon after this a chronic bowel disorder, which was considered hereditary, quickly yielded, and I was also enabled to lay aside the glasses which I had been obliged to wear when reading for any length of time.
Before this I had tried to believe in the orthodox religion, but I never could accept the doctrine of external punishment. Our Leader's words best express my thought: "In common justice, we must admit that God will not punish man for doing what He created man capable of doing, and knew from the outset that man would do" (Science and Health, p. 357). Now I have learned that the real man, whom God created, never does anything that God would not have him do, and that evil is not a part of man. Christian Science has answered all my longings, and has given me more than I ever dared to expect. Nor can I measure the bounds of my hope, for I have been taken into a realm of thought, where I can each day learn more of Life eternal.
