THE LECTURES

The pretty Casino was crowded last night [June 12] with men and women who came there to listen to a lecture on Christian Science by Frank H. Leonard of Brooklyn. Mr. Leonard was introduced by Joseph H. Lefferts, who said in part,—

Without having any understanding of Christian Science I will say that I believe life is what we make it—that sin is the cause of all the suffering in the world—that without sin the world would be without suffering. Heaven and earth are one world, and when we have a perfect understanding of God—when we know how to utilize properly His power, then will come the dawn of the heavenly day. There is an almighty, an invisible, a spiritual force, having perfect dominion over earth and heaven. We feel it—we know it—it seems to me to be a Mind divine, omnipotent and omnipresent. It is a force that is of God, it is a world of Life, of Love, and of goodness. We see it in every blade of grass as we ramble o'er the hills,—in everything, everywhere. This must be what God wills. It must be the will of God that all have perfect life. life unimpaired by any evil power.

The evil in the world comes from the operation, not of the divine, but of the human mind. We know not why this is so-we do not know of any reason why we should make all the evil in the world and then suffer the consequences. This is a perplexing problem—but what we have found out—what has come to us as the result of demonstrations—what has been revealed to us by the Scriptures and what has come to us through ways which we do not see or understand, impel us to say with great positiveness that evil may be extinguished by the power of God—God who is goodness. The power of sin will surely be overcome by that of righteousness. Undoubtedly this is so, and being so, surely perfect health and perfect happiness are obtainable by right living, by right thinking, and by communion with God. Now, is it not strange, if the God of yesterday was not the same to-day and to-morrow will change and change and change? Who can with reason contend that the power of God which wrought cures and healing at Capernaum, at Jerusalem, and in Galilee, may not do likewise now? I believe in a never-changing God. I think the God-power of yesterday is the same to-day and will be the same forever, and when we have a perfect understanding of it, and know how to utilize it, we shall be without sin—we shall have perfect happiness—and then will come heaven.
