I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing,...

I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, but by an unconscious longing for the truth. I had studied hypnotism and many other isms, believing that I had found the highest in this mental way. I then heard of Christian Science, and I also read a book on hypnotism, wherein it was asserted that Christian Science and mental suggestion were the same thing; but after attending a Christian Science service I recognized the untruthfulness of that assertion, and this made me unwilling to look into Christian Science. My interest was, however, awakened as I heard of the healing which was effected through its teaching. The temporary apparent success of the many isms, seeming to promise a brilliant future, confused me. I was not willing to give up my false gods and obey the command given in the Bible, and I was even less willing to give up my old religious belief. Furthermore, I was unwilling to give up the sciences studied heretofore. Christian Science found me in this mental condition, and through attending its services and the testimonial meetings regularly, also through the study of the German Christian Science literature (for which I wish to express my sincere gratitude), I gradually recognized the nothingness of the various theories I had held to, and thus the first glimpse of the truth entered into my consciousness. This was a command to give up my false gods. I bought a copy of Science and Health and began to learn English, which has been a great blessing to me. At first I understood but little, because I tried to get it all at once, but a passage in Der Herold enlightened me. It said that we should not pull up the wheat with the tares, but should wait for the harvest,—until a better understanding would enable us to recognize error as error and treat it as such. I was much helped by the words of our dear Leader (Science and Health, p. 485), where she says, "Emerge gently from matter into Spirit." An article, "Adam, where art thou?" published in Der Herold, has also been an effectual help to me, showing me how to lay off the old man with his deeds. This has raised me physically, morally, and spiritually, and has proven that Christian Science is more than a doctrine which can offer its students nothing but dogmas.

I owe endless gratitude to our dear Leader, who has brought to us this blessed truth, and has awakened in me a love for the Bible. In her book, Science and Health, she has taught me to have faith in God, to understand Him, and to love Him. I am striving to obey our Master's command, "If ye love me, keep my commandments," and thereby I shall try to prove my gratitude.
