"FAIR PLAY FOR CHRISTIAN SCIENCE."
We clip the following editorial, under the above caption, from the Trenton, N. J., True American of Aug. 5:—
A communication which appeared in yesterday's True American shows how frequently and how grossly those who hold the Christian Science faith are misrepresented in the public press. A reporter hears a "story." It is printed and shortly comes to be related as a fact. It has not been investigated, and it may contain no single foundation in truth.
This is evidence of carelessness on the part of the editor, some may say. But the editor only represents and reflects the views of the masses of the community in which he dwells. He seldom rises higher in thought than the best of the thought about him. Moreover, he has the excuse that the story is a good one and it is his business to print good stories. The fault lies deeper. It is the public which is to blame for being so careless and thoughtless in its treatment of those who differ from the mass in belief and are in the very great minority. It was so in the early days of New England's history, in the treatment of the Quakers, and it is so now in a less crude sense.
