THE LECTURERS

Judge Septimus J. Hanna lectured on Christian Science at the Wieting Opera House, May 31. He was introduced as follows by the Rev. Frederick W. Betts, pastor of the First Universalist Church:—

It is perfectly clear to all thinking people that the Bible has lost its hold on multitudes of men and women. It is perfectly clear to all who are aware of this almost universal skepticism, and the resulting superficial materialism of our times, that nothing is of greater importance than a revival of the influence of the Bible. But whoever accomplishes this great task must break through the crust of theological tradition and illumine the world with those deeper spiritual meanings which are in the Book. What the world needs is light-bringers. Whenever and wherever these come, I welcome them. Whatever the successes or failures of Christian Science, it is trying earnestly to reinterpret for us the Bible as a book of life and inspiration. Therefore it is as a light-bringer that I welcome Judge Hanna, and introduce him to you as your speaker this evening.—Correspondence.

At the Grand Opera House, Tuesday evening, May 19, there was a good-sized audience present to hear the lecture on Christian Science, delivered by Hon. Clarence A. Buskirk of St. Louis. The speaker was introduced by A. Hollingsworth, a leading lawyer of Keokuk, who said in part,—
