In founding Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy has simply systematized her understanding of the truth taught and practised by Jesus twenty centuries ago. To the orthodox thought of to-day there may seem much that is new in her teaching, but it is only a revival of a lost sense of undivided spirituality, a restoration of the proof of the ever-presence of the Christ, Truth, in the healing of sickness and disease as well as the destruction of sin. Suffering humanity has been seeking for ages a way of escape from sickness and sorrow, from anxiety and cares, but with only scant success, and that at the best only temporary. Of what avail is religion if it cannot help mankind at all times, in all ways, and in all experiences? "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Science affirms that "God is Truth" and "God is Principle." As divine Principle, God is unchangeable Truth; and as He is Love, He is unchangeable Love—"the same yesterday, to day, and for ever." Mrs. Eddy's scientific definition of God as divine Principle marks a very important departure from orthodox thought, and making such a departure it must be capable of proving that this is the right conception of Truth. The Master's test was: "These signs shall follow them that believe; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." This healing work Christian Science is doing through its followers in proportion to their understanding, and many thousands are bearing witness through the Christian Science periodicals, and at the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, how effectual this healing has been to them when all other means had failed and all hope of recovery through material methods had gone.

To such as these, who through long years of suffering had despaired of ever regaining health again, no words are eloquent enough to bear fitting witness to the spiritualizing influences of Christian Science, whereby they have not only been healed of their infirmities, but sin has been corrected, and thought uplifted and purified by the understanding of God as divine Principle, of Love ever-present and ever-available in all the daily round of human experience, and that the promises of the Master are just as much for this day and generation as when uttered to the disciples: "The works that I do shall he do also; . . . because I go unto my Father." "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

Christianity, separated from formula, is being restored to mankind in its primitive form through Christian Science, and if we come to be taught just as we would any other science we honestly wish to understand, if we are without any preconceived notions and free from all desire to make this teaching fit into our own individual concepts, we must yield to the conviction that Christian Science is not to be feared, ignored, or despised, but loved for its practical interpretations of the Scriptures and for the unfolding of a new understanding of God as the divine Principle, as Love and Truth—the healer of "all thy diseases."
