Christian Science Mind-healing is entirely different from...

Christian Science Mind-healing is entirely different from the various forms of mental healing which employ the human will or depend upon the supposed power of the human mind. Christian Science shows that it is not possible for one form of human error permanently or scientifically to remove another form thereof. One phase of mortal belief may take the place of another phase, and temporary benefit may seem to result from the change, but a complete cure can only be had as the result of the operation of divine Truth correcting and destroying the erroneous human belief which has caused the disease. The statement that the teachings of Christian Science prevent the exercise of sympathy and compassion is erroneous and misleading. It is true that Christian Science has no sympathy with pain and suffering, for these phases of evil are not of God, and therefore must be unnatural to the real man who is the likeness of God, but Christian Scientists have the utmost sympathy and tender compassion for the sufferer who still believes in the naturalness of and necessity for these evils. The first pages of the chapter in Science and Health called "Christian Science Practice" are devoted by Mrs. Eddy almost entirely to emphasizing the necessity for sympathy, human affection, tenderness, and patience on the part of the Christian Scientist who would hope to succeed as a healer of sickness and sin.
