Our reverend critic devotes most of his sermon to the plea that an effort be made for the same "works" to be accomplished by the followers of the Master to-day as when he himself preached the gospel and healed the sick, two thousand years ago. If our critic had taken the pains to investigate before condemning, he would have found that this teaching and its accomplishment in some measure is the essence of Christian Science, and has been the constant burden of Mrs. Eddy's consecrated labors for over forty years. Evidently he approves of such a doctrine when preached by himself, but when given to the world through Christian Science it immediately becomes "idolatry."

Our critic says there is little Christ in Christian Science, and that it "bows him from his throne." On the contrary, Christian Science gives to its adherents such a practical and provable understanding of the teachings of the Master that they are enabled to prove daily the verity of his promises and the ever-present availability of the full salvation which he brought to all mankind. Instead of denying Jesus or limiting either his works or his promises, Christian Scientists believe so firmly in them that they are willing to trust their health, happiness, and very lives to his teachings. Surely there could be no better test of one's "belief" in him. An honest investigation of the subject will show that Christian Science is founded on the undivided commands and practices of the Master, without reservation or equivocation. Such a position surely entitles it to the name of Christian, and an ability to prove with mathematical exactness the verity of its teachings must make it scientific in the highest degree.
