I have more reasons than most people to be grateful...

I have more reasons than most people to be grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the truth which she has given us through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Prior to 1897 I had a large and successful practice as a physician and surgeon in Baltimore, Md. In November of that year my carriage was struck by a street car. It was overturned and I was seriously injured. Symptoms of paralytic trouble followed, and a physician put me in a plaster-of-paris jacket, which I wore sixteen months. During this period rheumatic trouble developed, and this was followed by another distressing ailment. Besides these troubles my impaired health seemed to affect seriously my memory, and I was haunted by the fear that I might in some way injure, instead of benefit, those patients who still remained under my professional care. I had for many years had more or less faith in Divine healing, or in the power of mind over matter. In this extremity, however, everything failed to bring relief, and for years I wandered around, taking material treatments at the various health resorts, healing springs, and sanitariums,—remaining only a short time at each place and then resuming practice. In August and September, 1905, I had almost continuous attacks of suffering, and was left utterly prostrated and wrecked in health. I removed to the country at Laurel, Md., and seemed to be benefited by the change, but financial troubles, due to my continued illness and unwise investments, combined with ill-health, rendered my life one prolonged tragedy.

In this my sore extremity I procured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and entered a class taught by a loyal student of our Leader. Each page of our text-book now seemed illuminated by Truth, and in response to the healing power of Truth my physical infirmities rolled off into nothingness, leaving me rejoicing in the realization that I am well,—absolutely well. For many years I had been a member of an orthodox church, but had found little comfort from my religious beliefs. Now, however, the Scriptures have a new meaning. I find God's holy Word luminous with the truth,—truth which can be understood and demonstrated, and which renders our life one glorious anthem. Through the action of hope, faith, and love, and governed by Science, as discovered by Mrs. Eddy, I am now able to heal the sick without the use of material means, and I am a daily witness to the power of divine Truth not only to heal the sick, but to turn the sinner to paths of righteousness. May God bless our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
