Two weeks ago a little girl was born to us

Two weeks ago a little girl was born to us. For some time previous I had been trying to hold fast to the invincible law of Spirit, which shows that the mortal sense of birth is only the counterfeit. In this manner my thought had been raised to a higher spiritual plane, and when the birth occurred it was painless, nor was there any inconvenience such as usually attends childbirth. There was no doctor or practitioner present, only a Scientist friend and my husband (also a Scientist). A doctor came after the birth, and seemed greatly impressed with the facts of the case. As there was so little for him to do, he refused to take the fee which ordinarily he would have charged for such a case.

This higher sense of birth is without pain, and is only one of the many rewards that come to us for adherence to the truth. Although the demands of Science are strict and unbending, it well repays us, for my other three children were born with the use of instruments. I have been helped so much, that I gladly and lovingly say, "Thy will be done," at all times and under all temptations. Four years ago I was healed of defective eyesight, an internal trouble, mental and nervous depression, and other minor difficulties. These all vanished gradually from my consciousness, as the light of Truth dawned. The most tenacious error to yield has been a sense of resentment and hate, but I have patiently kept at work on it these years, and since this last great proof of Love's power I have caught a glimpse of the wonderful meaning in Mrs. Eddy's words, "The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love" (Science and Health, p. 560), and this has opened my eyes to the nothingness of human hate. This spiritual sense of divine Love is so dear, so different from anything I ever knew, so full of compassion and forgiveness, that I can in a degree now understand the sweet pardon so often expressed by the tender interpreter of God's truth, our Leader, when the world would persecute and malign. I have often thought that now Eve's dreaded curse, "In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children," is annulled for us; that Truth has proved the serpent to be powerless, so that we may as we understand, enjoy the harmony which Christian Science reveals.—Mrs. Ruth Story De Long, Delaware, O.
