The spring of 1891 found me in a most serious condition
The spring of 1891 found me in a most serious condition. I seemed to be starving to death, having been unable for several weeks to retain a particle of nourishment of any description. Three of our prominent physicians having failed in their efforts to relieve me, we were at a loss to know what to do, and hope was almost gone. A Christian Scientist lived next door and we were very fond of her as a friend, but felt that she was very foolish, to say the least, to be interested in what we considered a fad. A daughter of this Christian Scientist happened to come into my room, and seeing my condition remarked that her mother could help me. The faith of the child touched me and hope returned. I sent for her mother, who gave me one treatment, and I was healed. The fear that food had power to harm me was entirely destroyed and I partook of the family dinner that evening, suffering no inconvenience therefrom in any way. I seemed dazed by what had been done, but gradually came to the conclusion that the drugs previously taken must have brought about the changed condition, and fearing a relapse I began taking drugs again as a preventive.
One week of materia medica convinced me that it was Christian Science which had healed me, as I was going down again while taking the same drugs which I had taken before. Again I turned to Christian Science, and relief came very shortly, and I have been so thankful for this proof beyond all doubt. I have never been tempted to turn to material means since that time. Prior to the time mentioned I was a great sufferer from headaches. which appeared as often as every two weeks. I took daily treatment for a spinal trouble, and had a disagreeable catarrhal disease. I also suffered from a diseased condition which the doctors said could only be reached by the knife. These troubles all disappeared under Christian Science treatment. I was without a church home, as I had never found a creed to which I could subscribe, but I found in Christian Science all that I had been longing for in this direction, and lost no time in uniting with the church organization. Old things have passed away and all things become new.
Words can never express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her life of loving sacrifice for mankind, and my daily prayer is to be faithful in following the path which is so lovingly and clearly pointed out to us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
