STRENGTH

Jeremiah, 12:5.

"If thou hast run with the footmen,"—
Aye, Lord, and the way was so long
That only Thy presence among us
Could hearten us into song.

"And they have wearied thee,"—Master,
The leagues stretched to measureless length!
The weak fell back ere the finish
And the victors won by Thy strength.

"How canst thou contend with horses?"
Dear God, by Thy good might alone,
To give us the speed of an Arab
With vigor of thew and of bone.

"And if in the land of peace, ...
They wearied thee,"—Father, sweet rest
Was found of Thy weary children
In Thee, and this ease was blest!

"How wilt thou do in the swelling
Of Jordan?" Send forth our cry
To the infinite Mind which created,
And the palms of our feet pass dry!
