The recent attacks upon Mrs. Eddy have so stirred...
The recent attacks upon Mrs. Eddy have so stirred my appreciation of what her life-work has done for me, that I am impelled in loving gratitude to offer this long delayed statement of my healing. When a student at Smith College, I met with an accident in the gymnasium, just before an attack of an eruptive fever. As a result of these two experiences, a spinal trouble developed which lasted for more than two years, and which necessitated for months my wearing a frame to support my head. The local difficulty was finally relieved, but the system was so weakened that there followed more than a decade of ever increasing ills, during which time ten different physicians were consulted, including specialists on rheumatic, nerve, and throat troubles. In the search for health, I also traveled many miles, sought the waters of different mineral springs, adopted approved methods of dress, hygiene, and exercise.
At last, when hope had fled, there came into my life Christian Science, "aflame with divine Love" (Science and Health, p. 367), and although my healing was slow, I began to improve from the first treatment, suffering less pain, sleeping better, and gaining in weight. Within a week, improvement was remarked upon by friends who knew nothing of the cause. This occurred in October, 1898. Since that time I held for six years the position of resident director of a College Settlement in Boston, a position said to be one of the hardest a woman can hold, and I was stronger on leaving than at its acceptance. Though conscious that the "passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual" (Science and Health, p. 566), has but just begun, I can testify that in some measure I am rejoicing in the ever increasing realization that God is Love.
