PATIENCE
Youth anticipates, middle age prepares, the ripened experience of years, waits. If hope is the student, and faith the teacher, patience is education. If hope is the star, and faith the dawn, patience is the noon day. If hope expects, and faith declares, patience realizes. If hope thinks, and faith believes, patience knows. If hope is the song, and faith the sermon, patience is the worship. If hope is the testimony, and faith the plea, patience is the verdict. If hope is the lawgiver, and faith the law, patience is fulfilment. If hope is the prophet, and faith the priest, patience is the king. If hope is theology, and faith the creed, patience is religion. If hope is conviction, and faith repentance, patience is redemption. If hope comforts, and faith sustains, patience heals. If hope was the explorer, and faith the discoverer, patience was the discovery. If hope was in the Mayflower, and faith at Plymouth Rock, patience stands on Bunker Hill. If hope was constitution, and faith adoption, patience was independence. If hope was agitation, and faith abolition, patience was emancipation. If hope was Reformation, and faith Protestantism, patience is Christian Science. If hope, "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen," was at Valley Forge, keeping a prayerful watch over a stricken nation, and faith, Abraham-like at Gettysburg, pleading the cause of an enslaved race, patience is at Pleasant View, waiting and listening, Mary-like, for the glad tidings of peace on earth and good will to all nations and races.
