THE LECTURES
Under the heading, "Lauds Mrs. Eddy as Great Leader," the Boston Herald reported Judge Hanna's lecture as follows:—
"If Mrs. Eddy is incompetent and insane, then, in God's name, may we have a whole universe of incompetent and insane people!" Ringing emphasis was given to these words by Judge Septimus J. Hanna, in his lecture on Christian Science at The Mother Church last night, and a wave of mirth passed over the large congregation. "This is the insanity which the world needs," shouted the speaker, "the insanity for which the nations have longed, the insanity foretold by the prophets of old, the insanity which the only begotten son of God came to establish forever in this world!
"It is historically true that every great patriot and hero has been more or less misrepresented, maligned, and made the object of conspiracies and plottings on the part of the smaller minds around them, fired with malice and envy. It is more especially true of great moral and religious reformers. History fails to furnish a single exception to the rule that these reformers have been misrepresented and persecuted in the degree in which their labors and efforts were not understood. The moral and religious reformers, until their purposes and missions became apparent and known, were looked upon not as reformers, but as innovators, and therefore dangerous persons, and disturbers of settled conditions and institutions.
