About five years ago I had very severe attack of abdominal trouble. The attending physician told me I had narrowly escaped an operation, and that I would be liable to a return of the attack at any time. This led me to be very watchful as to my diet, and the fear of a second attack never left me. Some time before this illness, while talking with a friend, Christian Science was defined to me as "simple, scientific Christian living." Those four words often came to me as I realized how far I was from living a whole, harmonious, Christian life. I hungered and thirsted for the knowledge that would free me from the bondage of worry, impatience, and discontent, but not until seven months ago did I turn to Science for freedom. At that time I did not need physical healing so much as mental relief, but the dreaded attack of illness soon made itself felt. For two days I struggled to overcome the suffering, but my knowledge of Truth was not sufficient. As the symptoms were so aggravated, my friends grew alarmed and insisted upon my calling a physician. I feared that an operation would be considered the only means of relief, and I determined to give Science a trial, although my family felt I was running a great risk. A telephone call was sent to a faithful helper, but on account of other work she could not come at that time, and another Christian Science practitioner, whom I knew but slightly, was sent for. During the first treatment the fever subsided, and I fell into a restful sleep from which I did not awaken until morning. The next afternoon, however, the pain returned with renewed force, and the practitioner whom I had first called was summoned. After two treatments the pain, inflammation, and fever which had seemed so real were entirely gone; also the fear which had possessed me.
While I had sought only for the spiritual uplight which Science gives, I had received "more abundantly" than I had asked. I have since had many demonstrations of God's allness and of the sustaining power of Love, and I am deeply grateful to our Leader for the light she has shed upon Bible truths, and for every experience which has led me into a fuller knowledge of Truth.
