We are not qualified to deliver an essay on the creed...

[Editorial in the Marshall (Tex.) Sun.]

We are not qualified to deliver an essay on the creed of the Christian Science Church or on the facts connected with the recent suit, and we would not attempt it had we the information, for this is not a religious publication; but we have the greatest respect for any religious creed. which accomplishes good. There is no question but that the Christian Science Church has accomplished great good. The Church is but twenty-seven years old, and yet it has more followers to-day than many older sects. No effort is made by any Christian Scientist to thrust the creed down an unwilling throat. ... There is a spirit of intolerance about the attacks upon the Christian Science Church which we do not relish, and that hints at a violation of the Constitution of the United States, which guarantees to every one the right to worship as he chooses. We do not mean that to be a member of the Christian Science cult is in itself a guarantee of worthiness, for we have yet to discover the creed which is not shamed by the hypocrite. No charge of hypocrisy can be laid at the door of Mrs. Eddy. She has led gently and has practised what she has preached. She has reached an advanced age with a record of good deeds. ... We have the greatest respect for Mrs. Eddy and for her teachings, and we doff our hat to the Christian Science Church as we do to any sincere creed which helps men to do right.
