Ridgewood (N. J.) Herald
In every way to be commended is the action of the Baptist Church of Ridgewood in inviting the various religious denominations to meet their new pastor. The ministers of churches bear important responsibilities not only to their own congregations, but to the community at large. The teachings they give out are far-reaching in effect on community life. Therefore, what more natural than that townspeople should take a real interest in the advent of a new minister? What more natural than that they would wish to meet him and learn to know him? What more natural than that the members of religious bodies be invited to meet and greet him and wish him Godspeed in his new field of labor?
Curious it is that this most natural thing has not been practised in this town except in a very limited way. Upon our Baptist brethren rests the credit of having ignored sectarian bias by widening their invitation to include the Christian Science and Unitarian bodies. This may seem a trifling attention, but it is in fact the first recognition extended by any church in Ridgewood to either the Unitarians or Christian Scientists, since either of these movements has existed here. Therefore too much cannot be said in praise of the courage and courtesy of our Baptist brethren in reaching out the hand of fellowship to these two denominations heretofore ignored by the churches in Ridgewood. May this truly Christian spirit mark an era of greater tolerance in Ridgewood towards all those who may elect to worship the one God in the manner in which their own reason prompts!
