SEVENTH CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH IN CHICAGO

Chicago Sunday Examiner

The Seventh Church of the Christian Scientists of Chicago will be opened this morning [March 31] at 10.45 o'clock, at Hollywood and Winthrop Avenues in Edgewater. This church commences its teachings with a charter membership of one hundred and seventy-six members, most of them from Second Church, Wrightwood and Pine Grove Avenues, on the North Side, the overcrowding of which made another organization necessary. The members think it a happy omen that they can hold their first service on Easter morning, and that the continued growth of the Christian Science faith makes the establishment of a Seventh Church in the city necessary.

The following officers have been elected: First Reader, Ernest C. Moses; Second Reader, Mrs. Ida M. Stephens; Directors, Mrs. Ida N. Higley, Mrs. Emma Bush, Mrs. Lillie Kohlhammer, Mrs. Harriet R. White, and Mrs. Ida A. Warner; Trustees, Lansing B. Warner, Mortimer J. Higley, Charles G. Hawley, B. F. Bush, and LeNoir White.

"While the accounts of the growth and development of the Church of Christ, Scientist, are often exaggerated, and impossible figures given as to the present membership," said George Shaw Cook, of the Christian Science Publication Committee in Chicago, "the simple truth is of itself a demonstration of the truth of Mrs. Eddy's teachings. The book which is the corner-stone of Christian Science doctrine, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker G. Eddy, was first published in 1875. Then the few who believed in the discovery of Mrs. Eddy were looked upon as fanatics. Now there is hardly a city of consequence in the world that has not a Church of Christ, Scientist, and the greatest thinkers of the world acknowledge the power of this discovery for good.
