In attempting to express my gratitude to God, which is...
In attempting to express my gratitude to God, which is the smallest part of one's duty, my thoughts go back to the years that were spent in ignorance of infinite Love, when the darkness of pain and sorrow was only brightened spasmodically by the artificial light of material pleasure, which gave no permanent relief but more often than not left me blinded by its dazzling unreality. From babyhood upwards the thoughts of hereditary weakness were always held over me, the winter being a season of constant trouble. Added to this were business troubles, etc., and bad eyesight, one eye being extremely weak.
From the time when I became interested in Christian Science, four years ago, these material beliefs have gradually been displaced by the power of Truth. The chest trouble has dwindled to a shadow. The winter of discontent has been made almost summer by the warmth of ever-present Love. The fear of poverty is being obliterated by the knowledge that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I no longer feel that death follows my every step, because it is seen to be an enemy, a phantom, therefore nothing. My eyes are no longer strained, for I look beyond the mass of material illusion with the never-failing light of understanding. The spiritual uplifting has brought me to realize in some degree what is meant by the "river of water of life," because it is cleansing me of all the impure thoughts that former belief failed to remove, although on two occasions I honestly tried to mend my ways and discard such things as profanity and gambling; but I found nothing to give me the strength needed to rise above them until I sought Christian Science, mainly for relief from sickness.
Life has never been so sweet as it is now, for the happiness brought about by Christian Science has no canker; it is of pure gold. It is no dream of a visionary, but a joy that enters even into the most ordinary walks of human experience. For this knowledge of a God who shields as with the strength of a father and the tenderness of a mother, for the scientific and logical explanation of the words and works of Christ Jesus the Wayshower, I have to thank our Leader, Mrs. Eddy; but to show my true appreciation of her I must endeavor to live Christian Science, not simply talk about it.
