For perhaps fifteen years in my early life I was employed...
For perhaps fifteen years in my early life I was employed by the Esterly Reaper Works, and during the greater part of this time I was obliged to run a machine which compelled me to stand on one foot while I worked with the other. I am a very heavy man, and the constant strain caused my ankles to become affected. About twenty years ago I became so bad that I was obliged to give up my work, and I then engaged in the grocery business, hoping the change would prove beneficial. In this, however, I was disappointed, and two years later I found my ankles almost useless. During all these years different doctors were employed, but to no purpose. The case was variously diagnosed. The last physician said there was no hope of saving the feet, and made arrangements with a specialist from Chicago for their amputation. I also suffered intensely at times with rheumatic trouble.
Just at this time a friend persuaded me to try Christian Science as a last resort. I had never heard of it before, but was willing to try anything that would save my feet. After the second treatment I was able to discard the rubber stocking which I had used to support the ankle for some time. In a very few treatments the rheumatic trouble and minor ills were wholly relieved, but the weakness was slower in yielding; however, it has been entirely overcome. For twenty years Christian Science has been the only physician in our family, and never once has it been found inadequate to meet the demands made upon it, no matter how serious the trouble seemed to be. For all this we are indeed truly grateful; and especially to Mrs. Eddy, for showing us how to unlock the treasures of the kingdom of heaven, which this understanding of God and the Bible surely brings.—Watson L. Cowles, Beloit, Wis.
