I took up Christian Science because of its beautiful...

I took up Christian Science because of its beautiful teaching. I had become dissatisfied with life and everything in it, and was looking for something to satisfy. The Bible I had laid away as incomprehensible, when one day, about seven years ago, a stranger who was passing through our town spoke of Christian Science and of some of the wonderful works it was doing. Supposing it to be some sort of faith cure, I made the remark that I did not believe in anything of that kind, as I had seen so much of it and it had always failed. It was because the understanding of Science had been lacking in those cases, was quietly responded. This appealed to me at once as something new, something that I had been looking for but had not found. The thought stayed with me until I saw the Scientist again, and had asked him to send me the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I was then alone in Science.—no church, no other Scientists to talk with,—but the understanding came to me gradually and surely, until almost without knowing it I found myself into better health and a more contented state of mind. I had suffered for many years with neuralgic trouble in its worst form, also rheumatic and stomach trouble, headaches, etc., all of which have been overcome by Christian Science, after doctors and material remedies had failed.

I would like to speak of my first demonstration. I had all my life been troubled with chapped hands. and after I had been reading the text-book for awhile I decided I would try and prove this Science for myself. After I had worked to the highest of my understanding for two or three days and the conditions were apparently unchanged, I decided to wait until I had gained a better understanding of Christian Science, so I prepared to use a remedy which had always given temporary relief. But the thought came to me that I was having more faith in matter, and attributing more power to this medicine than I was to God, the only power. I then and there decided which master I would serve, so I put into practice all the Christian Science I knew. I threw the medicine away, and the next day my hands were entirely well. I have never had occasion to use any other remedy since. I was so glad and so grateful for this demonstration! I realized that because I had worked out some of the smaller problems I could work out the larger ones when I worked up to them, and so it has proved.

The better I understand Christian Science the better I understand why Scientists are so grateful to Mrs. Eddy. I realize that I can only prove myself worthy of these great benefits by my works.
