When I first came in contact with Christian Science I...

When I first came in contact with Christian Science I was very miserable, for afflictions had fallen fast around me and life seemed a failure. My health had been very poor for fifteen years. I had suffered from extreme nervousness and severe heart trouble, besides having had a paralytic attack. I lived in constant fear of this last trouble. All this time I was paying large sums for medical treatment, but was growing worse, and received very little encouragement from the three regular doctors and one specialist who had treated me. I had been a church member from childhood, and during my sorest afflictions I received the deepest sympathy of dear and loving friends in the church; but their prayers, as well as my own, failed to benefit me physically. In 1889, to add to my sense of sadness, I came with my husband and children to live in Oklahoma, at that time a lonely and unsettled country. One year from that time I had occasion to spend several weeks with a friend living near Guthrie, who was a Christian Scientist. She was cheerful, happy, and loving, and I was at once impressed with the change in her disposition since I had last met her, before either she or I knew anything about Christian Science. Thinking that there must be some power in Christian Science, I at once joined her in the study of Science and Health, and the Lesson-Sermons, and read some of the literature. In the course of our conversation I learned of many blessings she had received from Christian Science, and all this appealed to my saddened sense in a comforting way. I accepted the ideas readily, and am thankful to say that for the first time in all these years my fears were quieted, and after receiving one treatment I felt like a new creature. I can best explain my relief by comparing myself to one who awakes from a bad dream to find that his suffering had not been real, but only a dream. This was fifteen years ago, and the happiest time of my life has been during the years following. Besides my own healing, other members of my family have been benefited. Words cannot express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for Science and Health, which is my "daily strength for daily needs."
