Even as a child my health was not good, and three or four years prior to my marriage it became so impaired that I was seldom quite free from suffering. After the birth of my first child my health became more seriously impaired, and but very few days together would elapse without a physician being called in to minister to my ailments. I continued to decline, slowly but steadily, and after an examination for the purpose of definitely diagnosing my case, the physician informed me that my ailments were of such a character that a cure was practically impossible and that invalidism was my future portion. True, he said there was a certain operation which if successfully performed might alleviate my condition, but that the operation was dangerous in its nature and uncertain in its results, and he would not advise it. Neither my husband nor I were satisfied with this opinion, and it was arranged with him that a celebrated specialist in women's diseases should be called into consultation. The specialist made an examination, and concurred in every particular with the opinion of our own physician. Some four years passed by, during which period many remedies, both mechanical and otherwise, were tried, but without any benefit. During this period we changed our physician, and the new one spoke very hopefully of the benefit to be derived from a certain operation, claiming to have performed it successfully on several occasions, and at last we determined that I should submit to it. The operation was performed, but only ill resulted from it. It took me quite twelve months to recover from its effects; the first three or four were passed under the care of a trained nurse; the next three were spent in the East, away from all family cares and duties, and it was not until the twelfth month that my health was restored to the condition in which it was prior to the operation. At this point the restoration ceased, and was not resumed until some five years afterwards, when I became interested in Christian Science. From that time forward my health improved, until in the course of about two years I became, as I now am, a normally healthy woman. I had also been a great sufferer from rectal, ovarian, and kidney trouble, for each of which I received years of medical treatment without benefit, but Christian Science cured me of all. The medical bills were large and numerous, and the payment for nurses, drugs, and medical supplies was also very onerous. Restoration to health under Christian Science did not cost me anything, as my case was undertaken by a lady who was actuated solely by a deep sympathy for me in my hopeless condition and a desire to raise me out of it.
