Over two years ago I was attacked with a severe eye trouble, which was not only very painful but which the physicians pronounced dangerous. My old family physician, whom we had employed before accepting Christian Science, told me that my eyes would be irreparably injured, even if I did not lose my sight, unless I took medical treatment and wore glasses. Another physician also advised me to wear dark glasses, at least, as I was in the sunlight a great deal. Both these men were good friends of mine and their advice was prompted by the best knowledge they had as well as by a kindly interest. About the following September, while I was in this terrible condition, I was preparing a Mexican edition of the Los Angeles Times, and had three stenographers at work. My eyes were then so bad I could not read ordinary print, and a printed page looked like a piece of gray paper. One of my assistants would read my own notes and I would dictate back to the others the subject matter of this work, which took me three months, and during this time I seemingly became worse. Nine months dragged by, in which I suffered all day and got little or no sleep at night on account of the pain and fear that was was fastening upon me more and more. I was constantly under Christian Science treatment, and divine Love, meeting every need, gave me the daily strength and inspiration that was necessary for my work. I was able to finish my newspaper work, even ahead of time and in a manner satisfactory to my employers. My wife and daughter helped me in Christian Science, and I was treated by a fellow-practitioner, and I am thankful that I did not give up Christian Science. I have never known the truth to fail when faithfully applied, and it did succeed in my case. Gradually I was able to read and write, and during the last three days of my treatment my recovery was so rapid that it startled us all, while making us very grateful. The more gratitude I had the sooner the demonstration was made, proving that we cannot suffer while we are grateful.

Many have been the occasions in my Christian Science experience that I have thanked God because we live in a day when such healing is possible, even after the doctors give up a case. I have been healed, in Christian Science, from asthmatic and stomach trouble, etc. I had medical treatment for the asthmatic trouble, until I could not be doctored any more, and I suffered equally in Kansas City, Vera Cruz, and Mexico, thus disproving the laws of altitude. When I was healed, I also disproved the claim of heredity, as I was said to have inherited this trouble from my father. It is now over four years since I had my last attack, which the usual remedy could not even relieve, and which I was afraid would kill me. The truth has, indeed, made me free from this distressing disease, for which the doctors could prescribe nothing certain. About one year ago I had a severe touch of ague, exactly like the old-fashioned sickness I had in New Jersey many years before; but when the old enemy reappeared last summer, it did not frighten me. It was met on the basis of Christian Science, and therefore met successfully in less than one week. It has never appeared since, and I feel free from it, as it had not been healed by materia medica. Chronic stomach trouble was healed by Christian Science treatment just as effectually. So far back as I can remember I suffered from catarrhal trouble and headaches, and finally the remedies which I constantly carried in my pocket, on the advice of physicians, failed to remove the distressing conditions. They were all healed by Christian Science. As these diseases left me they bore away on their dark wings much of the irritability and other moral evils from which I had suffered as long as I can remember, and it is for these spiritual blessings that I am particularly grateful to God, and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
