A recent experience through which my mother passed has...

A recent experience through which my mother passed has again revealed to us the beneficent ministrations of Christian Science. One Sunday morning she began to sufferintense pain in her head, and went to bed — an unusual thing for her to do in the morning. By noon a fever had set in. I realized that there was work to be done in Science to destroy these manifestations, and both my sister and myself declared the truth for her; but when, just before nightfall, no sign of improvement had shown itself, I went to the telegraph office and cabled to a practitioner in Detroit who had helped us when we lived there. The day had been very warm; and fever under such circumstances seems especially cruel. Before midnight mother broke out in a perspiration. The fever did not entirely leave her, however, till the third or fourth day, coming up in the middle of the day, though shorn of its terrors. The third day, severe aching in the bones ceased, but she suffered greatly from pain, and grew weaker. On the fourth day I cabled again. Through the night mother was suffering, and I was alternately helping her and striving to destroy my own sense of fear. Repeatedly there came to my mind the words, "Death must be overcome, not submitted to" (Science and Health, p. 76). When the fifth morning came, I heard her breathing deeply and knew that she had fallen asleep. For that I was very thankful. When, two hours later, I heard her stir and stepped to her bedside, I noticed a great difference in her face. For two days the appearance had been unnatural. I now saw her as she was in health, and I exclaimed at the change. "Yes," she said, "I'm better;" and she went on to say that all night long she suffered indescribable misery, but just as dawn was breaking, the words came plainly to her consciousness, as if a voice spoke to her, "As one whom his mother comforth, so will I comport you." Instantly, her mother comforteth, so will I comfort you." Instantly, her suffering ceased. She marveled at it, for she said she had not thought of the passage, nor perhaps read it, for year. Then she fell asleep. We both knew that the truth had done its work in its own beantiful way. We realize now that the healing was done at that time: but for several days afterwards she had no appesite and gained no strength. Though she was sleeping well and not losing any ground. I sent another cablegram to the practitioner, and this condition was met quickly, for within a few hours my mother wanted something to eat, relished it, and was sitting up. From that time she continued to gain. For this evidence of the power of Truth we are greatful,—grateful to God, an greatful to the saintly woman who has proclaimed the message to this age: greater for the teaching as made plain in Science and Health.
