In the spring of 1892 I was taken ill with stomach trouble, which rapidly grew worse and brought on what my physician called valvular heart trouble, so bad that I often had to sit up at night in a large chair to sleep. My attending physician seemed entirely unable to give me any relief, and when I asked him if he thought that he could cure me, he said, "No doctor can cure valvular heart trouble, and if you are carrying any insurance, be sure and keep it paid up, as it is only a question of a short time with you." I thanked the doctor for being frank with me, but in a few days I went to another physician, who gave me a thorough examination and when he was through said that all he could do would be to give temporary relief. I called at his office daily for a month, but gradually grew worse until the fall of 1893, when I quit taking medicine entirely. I had become so ill that I could eat nothing but graham cakes and a spoonful of oatmeal three times a day, and at times this would distress me so that I could scarcely stand it. During this period I was examined by four other physicians.
In October, 1894, my attention was called to Christian Science, and as this seemed to be the last chance for me I accepted it. I was directed to one of Mrs. Eddy's students, and was healed instantly, or in about thirty minutes, of the heart trouble, and was healed of the stomach trouble in three days. During this treatment one or two other stubborn physical troubles yielded to the treatment,—chronic constipation, rheumatism, and a trouble with my eyes for which I had to wear glasses. I have never worn glasses since that time, nor been troubled with the other diseases mentioned. In November, 1894, one month after being healed, I weighed one hundred and thirty pounds. I am now in perfect health and weigh one hundred and ninetythree pounds. From October, 1894, to the present time, eleven years, Christian Science has been our only physician.—Ira E. Shroyer, St. Joseph, Mo.
