Christian Science has been the light of my life for eight...
Christian Science has been the light of my life for eight years. For thirty-three years I was a blacksmith, and nine years ago a heavy blow on the corner of the anvil broke off two slivers of steel, which went directly into my left eye. The sight was destroyed at once, and I discovered that I could see but very little with the other, not enough to distinguish one thing from another. I called my family physician, who was a skilful surgeon, and asked him to take the injured eye out, as I knew the nature of such wounds, but for some unknown reason he would not do so. I was led home, and remained in the house about two months under the physician's treatment. I suffered the greatest agony, was unconscious a part of the time, and morphine was the only relief. I had no rest day or night. My minister came to see me every day and prayed with me very earnestly. At the end of two months I dismissed my physician; I was bound to have the eye out. I went to see an oculist, who said the eye should have been taken out when first hurt, in order to save the other. I could see but very little and did not care what was done, so I told him to take it out, which he did. I paid the bill,—sixty dollars for three minutes' work,—which took all the money that my friends and I had. This was in June. I was brought home and put to bed, but was out in a few days, though the sight in my remaining eye was no better. I could walk about with a cane, but I had more or less suffering most of the time.
In November I tried to do some carpenter work, and that finished me up,—it was all dark with me. The doctor said to put me in a dark room to spend the winter. This condition lasted till April. In the latter part of March my eye was examined by the best physicians, and they gave it up; they said it could not be healed by medical science. My neighbor, who is a medical doctor, told me to try Christian Science; that he knew of some who had been greatly helped by it. Now I had quit praying. I was very thin in flesh, and very weak and nervous. I did not care to have any one talk to me but my wife. How to get a healer was the next thing, as my church friends did not believe in Christian Science healing, and what was I to do? I began to think about my Bible, and tried to recite the twelfth chapter of Romans, for I had learned it by heart in days gone by. This leads me to say that my healing came through earnest prayer to the true and living God. I asked God to send me a healer, and my prayer was answered. In a half hour a young man came to see me. He said he came to tell me that Christian Science would cure me. I asked him if he knew of any one who had been healed by it, and he said he had been healed of heart trouble. He said he would treat me and God would do the healing. I told him I had no way to pay for the good work, and he replied that if I would come to the meeting and tell of my healing, when I was well, that was all he wanted. I told him I would testify to the whole world, and I am fulfilling my promise now. I want to do something for the Cause that has done so much for me. In thirty-two days I could see to go alone. I will not try to give details here.
Three years ago I was led by a kind friend to believe that a perfect demonstration could be made and my eyesight restored, and so it is. I have read Science and Health through. I do all my own reading and writing now. I have had many beautiful demonstrations for myself and friends. I am a member of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, here, also a member of The Mother Church. Many thanks to our Leader. I love the Christ-truth that makes us free. I love our Leader, for she has shown us the way from earth to heaven.—John L. Crocker, St. Joseph, Mo.
