As I never seemed to be strong from childhood, I was reared very tenderly. In 1879 my husband, myself, and our little boy went north to locate on a homestead, and in 1881, after a little daughter was born, I did not regain my health and strength as before. We had two physicians, the best the new country afforded, but at one time a despatch was sent to my parents that I might pass on at any time. Praying parents were soon by my bedside, and I finally recovered sufficiently to return to their home. We consulted a doctor, who said I never would be any better until an operation was performed. I submitted, and was under treatment for some weeks, then went back to my own home. The doctor continued to send medicine, but failed to help me; I could not lift my children at all. and it seemed a burden to live any longer, yet I felt I had much to live for.
In 1883 another physician was called, who said he would do what he could for me if I would give him a through trial. He treated me for nine months, but I had to encourage him. I was making God's Word my study, for it seemed to be all that gave me any hope. I believed in the healing works of Jesus and his followers. Soon after, I picked up a torn newspaper, and saw the words "Christian Science." I had never heard the name before, but I kept it for years, and was searching for something that would tell me about it. I loved the name; I was sick of medicine, and homesick. My loving parents had done everything they could, even to getting up at midnight to intercede for me to a merciful heavenly Father, who through Jesus had healed Jairus' daughter; and yet they had not learned that we must rely on God only, and thought it not safe for me to be without medicine. The doctor wanted to hear from me every week, but I wrote him that he need not send me any more medicine for I would trust the Physician who could always be present. I kept on searching for Christian Science, but not until 1895 did we learn of it as Science and Health gives it. Two years later a dear Christian Scientist sent us a copy of the text-book, as she was treating my husband. We have since bought two copies, and we study it with the Bible every day.
When I heard of the dear, God-inspired woman, Mrs. Eddy, who had proved that Truth still heals in Jesus' own way, I did so long to see her or write to her. My dear mother, who suffered so much, was soon treated by a Scientist and wonderfully helped, and she and my father study Science and Health. I am in better health since I gave up the medicine than I ever was before. My husband was attacked with severe illness over a year ago. We had to call for help and I feel that Christian Science was all that saved him. We are clinging to the truth, feeling that God is able to deliver us, and we are very grateful that He has given our dear Leader wisdom and understanding to lead us out of darkness into the infinite light of Love and Truth.
