My coming into Christian Science was through great...
My coming into Christian Science was through great suffering. From a child I was never strong, and as I grew older I became what the doctors pronounced a hopeless invalid. I lived under this law of materia medica many years, sometimes able to be dressed and about the house, and often months would pass that I could not be on my feet at all. My case was in the hands of the best physicians in the state. I consulted specialists as well, and the verdict was invariably the same,—I would perhaps live many years but could never be well.
During one of the seasons of prostration to which I have referred, a friend who is a strong Christian Scientist, called to see me. She told me something of the truth, said I need not suffer, that I could be well in a short time, all I need do was to give up my physician and accept Christian Science treatment. Her words fell on deaf ears. Give up my physician! Perish the thought! I see now how I rejected the "cup of cold water" given in Christ's name, and clung to personality and material remedies.
This state of affairs existed for four months with no change for the better. At last the doctor went to my husband and told him there was nothing more to be done; he had exhausted all his resources, and it seemed useless for him to continue his visits.
