It is generally believed that members of my trade drink heavily. I was no exception, yet I had a desire to overcome the taste for liquor, but did not know how. I also had the habit of chewing and smoking tobacco. These habits brought on gout, disease of the kidneys, and general debility, and I was pronounced incurable by several physicians. For four years I was not able to work at my trade.
A relative recommended Christian Science, and having tried it for a sprained ankle and found it reliable, I consented to take treatment for the above-named diseases. At first I was not steadfast because I loved intoxicants too much; but growing worse, and all other aids having failed, I returned to the practitioner, and she led me kindly but firmly to mental and physical health.
For three years I have been working at my trade. I find pleasure in my work and do better since I have the light of Christian Science. I have not had any desire to drink, smoke, or chew for six years. All the difficulties which have come up since have been overcome with the understanding I have received by the study of Science and Health and the other Christian Science publications.
