The Light of Love

The world's noblest leadership has ever effected a chief good in that ministry to which Emerson refers when he says, "That is always best which gives me to myself." In the disclosure to humanity of the ideal selfhood, its origin, nature, capabilities, freedom, destiny, there is communicated the inspiration and the impulse which make more possible the unselfishness, the faith, the transformation, and the sovereignty of our highest moments.

He who, in Truth's name, wrests thought from the bonds of material pettiness, and attaches it to life's larger significance,—he becomes a liberator, humanity's lasting benefactor and friend, and in the years his recognition cannot fail.

True leadership fulfils yet another effective ministry in the manifestation and allurement of love. In the fires of a great heart's devotion to a redemptive idea the selfish and the commonplace are consumed, and that true affection which always conveys strength, speeds, upon every occasion, to embrace human need. This explains full well to the many, a phenomenon which is quite inexplicable to some; namely, the loving and joyous enthusiasm with which Christian Scientists respond to every opportunity to visit their Leader, or do her honor.
