On a stone over the entrance of my old home, is the Bible...
On a stone over the entrance of my old home, is the Bible inscription, "Seek, and ye shall find." On one occasion my school teacher said, "Children, don't believe that our religion is the best there is." These words and this Scriptural passage have often come to my memory in later years.
In kindergarten, I was told that God is Love and all good. Then later on I was told in school that God sends us sickness and evil to bring us back to Him. These contradictions I could not believe, since they do not harmonize: therefore I finally laid my Bible aside as a book which I was not to understand.
Fifteen years ago, my youngest brother, then seven years old, was afflicted with carious bones. He heard of a man who healed the sick without medicine. I would not believe this, yet no medicine could help my brother, or even relieve his great pain. I myself had always been feeble and was constantly suffering. My mother had often said that she did not believe I would live to grow up.
Two years later my husband asked me to go to an English church. I went, against my wish, because I could understand very little English. This was the Christian Science Church in Rochester, and I believed it to be like all the others, nor did I then know of the healing power of Christian Science. After I was shown to a seat, a feeling came over me.—if God would only save me from my trouble, and save me soon. While listening to the Lesson-Sermon, I forgot my sickness; I was fed with the word of God. After the service I was told that God sends no sickness, and that He heals without medicine, also that God is Love and He can only give love and all good, if we obey Him.
That moment I was made well; I was a different person. Thus Truth has made me free from sickness and suffering.
How can words alone express my gratitude! My brother also was healed through Christian Science, yet not instantaneously as I was. Much has been given me through divine Love and wisdom, and our whole family has been helped.
Through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I have learned to read English. Every day I find that there is something for me to overcome, and only through good can I get the victory.
Mere words can never express my gratitude to God and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, but I shall try and let divine Love lead me daily.—A. S., Rochester, N. Y.
