Christian Science classifies the spiritual as the real and eternal, and matter as the temporal and phenomenal. If matter were "just as real as spirit," then, like spirit, it would be eternal and unchanging. That which is eternal is incapable of change. The modern physical scientists recognize that matter is not real but merely phenomenal; that all we know of matter is what it appears to our senses to be; that its so-called qualities are attributed and not inherent. For example, opacity is attributed according to the keenness or dulness of our sense of vision. Paul says, "The things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal."
