In September, 1899, I first heard of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy. I was told that it gave an explanation of the Bible, and that by reading this book people had been healed. This was "good tidings of great joy" to my hungry thought, consequently the book was ordered at once. Longingly I awaited its arrival, and with eagerness read it when it came.

I was in need of physical healing and was advised to have treatment, although told to do just as I pleased in the matter. My desire for a higher understanding of God and man's relation to Him was paramount, and it was with a degree of reluctance that I turned to a practitioner for help; however, I had treatment for a time and was healed permanently of chronic constipation.

I then began working out my own salvation. The light was dawning. I found that the "old man with his deeds" must be put off to reveal "the hidden man of the heart,"—God's image and likeness. I saw that Paul's saying, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind," must be obeyed. This work begun, the conflicts were many, but through it I have been given the proof that "Truth is always the victor" (Science and Health, p. 380). As I progressed in this work, denying self and all that I understood to be error, neuralgia, indigestion, bronchitis, and many other ills disappeared into nothingness.
