Unchristian Resignation

The promise of future justice never removes the sting of present wrong, and he who seeks to lighten human burdens by such attempted amelioration will be justly judged by the world as practically condoning offences which he ought to condemn.

We were led to think of this recently on reading the following bit of counsel to workingmen, which appeared in the editorial columns of a religious weekly. After speaking disapprovingly of a given form of labor agitation, the writer says,—

"Fill the position allotted to you by Divine Providence, and be resigned to His will; suffer an injustice for Christ's sake, but do no man wrong; practise self-denial and carry the cross, and you shall wear a crown for eternal life."
