"Thy Will Be Done"

The Universalist Leader

"Thy will be done," I read one careless day,
And thought, if thus I pray a slave I' ll be;

Self-willed I then resolved I would not prayer
A prayer that cost the joy of feeling free.

"Thy will be done," I read when in distress,
And sadly said: "Yea, Lord, I yield to-day;
But not because I choose I do confess,
For if I could I still would have my way."

"Thy will be done," I read when more mature,
Then asked: "What willest Thou as to thy son?"
The answer was: "True manhood to assure,"
And then I prayed: "Thy will, O God, be done."

Not as a trembling bondman did I pray,
Nor yet as those who feel themselves O'erthrown;
But seeing then that God's was wisdom's way
I gladly strove to make His will my own.
